Chef's Assistant - Part-time, Evenings
Rivermont Collegiate is a co-educational, independent school offering an exclusively college preparatory program. Its eight and one-half acre campus is located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River in Bettendorf, Iowa. Founded in 1884, Rivermont is the only Preschool through 12th Grade college preparatory, day, and boarding school in the Quad Cities.
Summary
The Chef’s Assistant is responsible for the planning, preparation, and service of evening meals for international boarding students as well as staff Dorm Parents five times a week. This is a part-time job with approximately 20-25 hours per week and two consecutive days off (to be determined at hire). The goals of this position are to provide healthy menu options with focus on quality, taste, and variety. The boarding student demographic is multi-cultural; the ideal candidate will have varied culinary skills and knowledge of ethnic, international, and intercontinental cuisines.
The Chef’s Assistant is an integral part of the residential community and boarding experience at Rivermont. A successful candidate must possess strong inter-personal skills with an ability to build rapport with culturally diverse students and adults.
Relationships
The Chef’s Assistant reports directly to the Kitchen Manager/Chef. The Finance Director supervises and supports kitchen operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Collaborating with the Kitchen Manager/Chef on menus as well as daily preparation and cleaning schedules.
- Stocking and taking inventory as needed.
- Maintaining standards of sanitation, safety, production, service, and food quality.
- Managing/planning service for the evening dinner for approximately 20-30 boarding students and staff.
- Prep work, cooking and cleaning
- Maintaining compliance with all mandated health codes and applicable laws.
- Working with the Kitchen Manager/Chef to adhere to the food budget.
- Possess an attention to detail and a passion for cooking.
- Assisting with occasional school special events.
- Ability to effectively communicate with students, dorm parents, faculty, and supervisors.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Kitchen Manager/Chef.
- Strong attendance and punctuality are a MUST to ensure that the duties and responsibilities of the job are
- performed successfully.

The optimal candidate will have an education in Culinary Arts – or equivalent experience in the industry – while maintaining high standards of sanitation, safety, production, service, and food quality. SERV Safe Sanitation certification– or willingness to obtain – is required.

A current driver’s license will be required. A criminal multi-state background check is required and must be successfully completed before employment can begin.
